The Flalok Project: Reviving the Blaan's tradition of storytelling

The Conrado & Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation (CLAFI) organized the Regional Flalok Festival last February 1, 2017, held at the Sarangani Provincial Gymnasium. The said event launched the Blaan Big Books, Teachers and Learners materials, alphabet and number charts for Blaan students. These Blaan materials shall be used by grade 1 and 2 pupils in selected Blaan schools in Sarangani, GenSan, South Cotabato, and Koronadal City. The event was also served as a gathering of the Blaans from different parts of the region.

"Flalok Project: Reviving the Blaan Art of Storytelling to Improve Literacy and Develop a Community of Readers in South Central Mindanao is a project that endeavors to reinforce the MTB-MLE (Mother Tongue Based- Multilingual Education) paradigm through Flalok, a Blaan traditional storytelling, as platforms to improve Blaan children literacy." Flalok Project is a two-year project implemented by CLAFI with funding from the USAID through the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF) Phil-Am Fund. Flalok project is also in partnership with Kafye Blaan Empowerment Inc., DepEd, National Commission for Indigenous People (NCIP), Save the Children, Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), and Alcantara Group.

According to Hon. Fulong Fredo Basino, the Indigenous People Mandatory Representative (IPMR) of Sarangani Province, this project helps create awareness among the populace, particularly the stakeholders about the Flalok project and its implications to culture and heritage preservation and development. As he puts it, Flalok project is a vehicle for cultural transformation and reawakening.
