On winning my first Journalism Award

Reflecting on my journey, my career as a writer began over a decade ago, following my college graduation. It was born from a desire to challenge the preconceived notions that my undergraduate degree could only lead to a career in teaching. While being a teacher is absolutely nothing wrong, I always felt a deeper calling. This, combined with my love for storytelling, guided me toward a different path.

Upon graduating from college, I established my blog, capitalizing on the growing popularity of this platform at the time. While I may not have achieved the status of a social media millionaire as some might have anticipated, this venture unlocked many opportunities for me. It paved the way for my growth as a writer, a public relations specialist, and an advocate. The expansion of my network and the collaborations with various individuals and groups within the region were outcomes I had not initially anticipated, yet they have enriched my journey immeasurably.

In this journey, I have become a trusted figure for documenting their narratives. Transitioning from an advocacy blogger and citizen journalist to a fully-fledged writer, crafting stories from SOCCSKSARGEN has evolved into a passion for me. Naturally, not all of my work generates income, but my focus and determination remain unwavering. I am committed to sharing impactful stories that can resonate with anyone who reads or views the content I create and produce.

My unexpected victory at the 16th Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards was a delightful surprise. The prestigious award ceremony took place on November 13, 2023, at the esteemed Fairmont Hotel located in Makati City.

It was only when a seasoned journalist from GenSan encouraged me to participate that I became aware of this esteemed competition. Oblivious to its importance, I confidently submitted entries in three different categories.

The Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards is an annual recognition program in the Philippines that celebrates excellence in agricultural journalism. The awards commend excellent journalism in agriculture, rural development, and related topics across various categories such as news, features, columns, and television programs, all promoting a deeper understanding of agriculture's role in Philippine society.

The awards ceremony brings together professionals in the field of agriculture journalism, government officials, and industry stakeholders to honor and encourage high-quality reporting in this important field.

Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards

In a fortunate turn of events, my article, "Reyjohn Basco's Journey to Empower Coffee Farmers," was honored with the Best Agriculture Feature Story (Regional) award. The article was published in SunStar Davao on the 15th of June, 2023.

Over the years, I have dedicated myself to chronicling the stories of our region's advocates, particularly farmers, intending to raise awareness, fostering connections with influential individuals, and advocating for their needs. This recognition affirms that my efforts to provide a platform for their voices are making a difference.

Regardless of the award, I persist in my commitment to write/document, connect, and lobby for our advocates to key people, particularly our farmers, helping them to address their concerns and amplifying their voices.

Alhamdulillah! Grateful to the Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Award for this recognition.
