Pouring Passion: How a Former Overseas Barista is Changing Coffee Culture in Mlang
In Mlang, a town in Cotabato Province, quality coffee had yet to find its champion—no cafés advocating for quality brews. That was until Jean Michael P. Rasgo stepped in, driven by his deep passion for specialty coffee. Seeing the untapped potential, he established BLM Neighborhood Coffee, bringing a fresh and refined coffee experience to his hometown.
For four years, Rasgo worked as a head barista in a Saudi Arabian coffee shop, mastering the craft of brewing. Yet, rather than continuing his career abroad, he chose a different path. His wife's encouragement and the dream of sharing quality coffee with his community inspired him.
Rasgo first ventured into entrepreneurship by selling food online before transitioning to coffee. He began with a pop-up café at home, offering cold brews in five flavors, personally delivering them to customers as part of his commitment to service.
Determined to expand awareness, he collaborated with fellow entrepreneurs, setting up a temporary coffee stall in Mlang’s plaza. He also joined the food bazaar at Kidapawan City’s Timpupo Festival. These efforts gradually built recognition for his brand.
On August 18, 2024, Rasgo’s vision materialized with the grand opening of BLM Neighborhood Coffee’s physical café. Focused on premium and specialty coffee, he incorporates coffee education into his advocacy, ensuring consumers understand the value behind every cup.
“What I experienced abroad in terms of coffee, I want to bring here to Mlang,” he shares. “We serve quality coffee at an affordable price.”
Rasgo’s expertise has earned him national recognition. He was the champion of DTI Blends 2023 Brewing Competition and the Philippine Coffee Brewer League (PCBL) 2024, where he represented the country in Bangkok, Thailand. These accolades not only boosted his café’s reputation but also strengthened his connections within the coffee industry.
“For me, competing isn’t just about winning—it’s about building relationships and expanding networks,” he says. “It also helps refine my skills and reminds me of the industry’s standards.”
Despite the challenges of introducing specialty coffee to Mlang, Rasgo remains dedicated to educating his customers. He conducts personalized brewing sessions, demonstrating different techniques, showcasing beans, and offering guided tastings. Through these interactions, he explains what specialty coffee is, and why it commands a higher price, and highlights the invaluable role of local coffee farmers.
Like many entrepreneurs, Rasgo faces financial hurdles, stiff competition, and rising coffee bean costs. Yet, his determination drives him forward. He hopes to further hone his expertise by enrolling in a Q Grader or roastery program, eager to contribute to the growing coffee community in the region.
“I want to highlight the hard work of coffee farmers in Cotabato Province,” he says. “BLM will be a platform to showcase them and their beans.”
Rasgo relentlessly builds his business while cultivating a community that appreciates quality coffee in Mlang.
