Sarangani LGU conducts IEC seminar on ill effects of illegal drugs
ALABEL, Sarangani (November 5, 2022) – The provincial government of Sarangani conducted an 'Information Education Communication (IEC) seminar on Substance Use and its Ill effects to Social Functioning and Mental Health' to Capitol employees on November 3 in order to strengthen and promote the drug-free workplace policy.
It was sponsored by the Provincial Anti-illegal Drug Abuse Council (PADAC), through its focal person Lizette Lopez, and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).
The Human Resources Management and Development Office (HRMDO) invited CEO Jerry Joseph Valderrama and Clinical Operation Supervisor Argel Aventura of the JJ Valderrama Behavioral Management Center from Davao City, to conduct the seminar to some Capitol Employees.
Valderrama discussed the Fundamentals and Science of Substance Use Disorder and Effects of Substance Use to Social Functioning and Mental Health. He also provided the employees with information on the effects of substance use disorder on the brain, the individual as a whole, and its consequences on the family, the community, and the workplace.
Argel Aventura, on the other hand, discussed the definition of Information Education Communication (IEC) and gave some tips on making effective IEC materials for drug prevention.
According to Jerome Valentos, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) provincial officer, the IEC is in line with Republic Act 9165 or the Institutionalizing of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and Repealing Republic Act No. 6425, otherwise known as the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1972.
“We are fighting our own government from war on drugs, kaya nga sa government mismo may programa tayo na ini-educate natin ang mga kasama natin sa government offices. If a government employee will be engaged to drugs, for us anti-illegal drug enforcers, it is a priority because we as government employees must be the role model to the public,” Valentos said.
Lopez also encouraged the employees to “help the government in advocating to your families and communities about the ill effects of illegal drug use and abuse.”
“Take this opportunity for you to listen and to learn, and to realize at the end of this activity that you are valuable,” she added. (Martin Fernando E. Bernad Jr./SARANGANI PROVINCIAL INFORMATION OFFICE)
